Do I need any previous experience to take a workshop at CAP?
None whatsoever. Our workshops are designed to take students through a process start to finish, regardless of your level of previous knowledge or experience. Some instructors suggest resources to explore prior to your workshop to provide additional background. We offer a handful of advanced workshops, which should be accessible to anyone who takes our introductory workshops.
How do I know what materials to bring in for my workshop?
Detailed workshop descriptions and material fees can be found on our website. We recommended that you read through the workshop descriptions carefully before registering and contact CAP for advisement should you have any questions.
Should I bring in my art portfolio so that I can add my work from a class at CAP?
Please note that workshops are for learning a photographic process, not building an artwork portfolio. The viewing of portfolios for all workshops is at the discretion of the instructor.
How far in advance should I register for a workshop?
Registering in advance is suggested as many of the workshops ﬁll quickly. Please register online at capworkshops.org to secure a place. CAP accepts all major credit cards and Paypal. All students must pay in full at the time of registration. CAP does not guarantee placement in a workshop until payment is received in full and if a spot is available.
Please note that most CAP workshops require a minimum enrollment of 4 students to run. If enrollment is insufficient one to two weeks prior to the workshop date, the workshop may be cancelled (in which case, you will receive a full refund). For this reason, we recommend taking the leap and registering early!
I want to take a workshop with my class – Does CAP offer workshops to pre-arranged groups?
Yes! CAP offers proprietary demonstrations, 1-Day Hands-on Demonstrations, and full 2-Day Workshops for pre-arranged groups, such as student or travel groups. I’m doing work I think Penumbra/CAP’s community would enjoy – Is there somewhere I can post it?
Of course! Alternative photography enthusiasts are the reason we’re here! If you have some alternative work or a relevant project you think our community should see, navigate to our blog at capworkshops.tumblr.com, and click “Submit your post” on the left-hand side. Be sure to tell us a little about yourself, your project, and include an image or a link to your website if you can. If you have a question, please email it to firstname.lastname@example.org.
What should be included in your submission:
- Your Name and link to website or work.
- A little bit about yourself
- Summary of the work.
- 1 to 2 images in post.
What if a workshop is cancelled?
There are situations that arise in which a workshop may need to be cancelled. In the event of a cancellation, students will be notiﬁed as soon as possible. Students are entitled to a full refund for the workshop cost and materials fee.
CAP is not responsible for any non-refundable travel costs (such as airfare, train tickets or accommodation costs). We would advise you to consider purchasing travel insurance.
Who do I contact if I missed the registration deadline for a workshop?
To sign up after the registration deadline, please call to conﬁrm registration is still open. The standard registration deadline is 14 days prior to the start date of the workshop.
Is there a waitlist if the workshop I am hoping to join is full?
If your desired workshop is full, you can contact us and request to be added to the wait-list in the event a spot opens up. Please email your request to email@example.com and include your contact details (name, phone, and email address) and the title and date of the workshop you are interested in. Wait-list priority is given on a ﬁrst-come, ﬁrst-serve basis.
I won’t be able to make it to an upcoming workshop, is there a way to cancel or reschedule?
In the event a student must cancel their registration for a workshop, they may do so any time before and up to 14 days prior to the workshop, and will receive a 100% refund of workshop cost plus any material fees.
In the event a student must cancel attendance from a workshop after the registration deadline (14 days prior to the start of the workshop), this will be considered a withdrawal. The workshop costs and materials fees are not refundable but can be used as credit toward another workshop where enrollment is available. To withdraw from a workshop please email firstname.lastname@example.org or call (917) 288-0343.
Please provide us with as much advanced notice as possible for consideration. Beyond this, CAP cannot be held responsible for any cancellations outside of CAP’s control.
Due to the intensive nature of our workshops, we cannot offer makeup sessions outside of workshop time or in future workshops. Instructors are not required to bring students up to date during scheduled workshop time for missed days or lateness. It may be possible to arrange a private tutorial with an instructor in your desired process by contacting the Workshop Coordinator.
Where and when can I pick up the work I created in my workshop at CAP?
Any work created by workshop participants that is not taken home at the time of the workshop will be available for pickup on an appointment basis after the time of the workshop. If you need to retrieve prints from the CAP facilities, please call 917-288-0343 to make an appointment to pick up your images.
Any images left at CAP for over 30 days may be used by CAP for educational purposes.
What is darkroom appropriate clothing?
Many workshops use chemicals that will temporarily stain skin and permanently stain clothing. Workshop participants are generally expected to wear clothing that they do not mind getting dirty or permanently stained.
Can I bring in a model for a Wet Plate workshop?
One model is allowed for Wet Plate Shooting Night. The use of models for all other Wet Plate workshops is at the discretion of the instructor.
